Not all FamCamps are created =

While we are here in the Panhandle of Florida, we have decided to take a look at every option for FamCamps around.

The first few days we were here, we drove over to Hurlburt Field and Eglin, just to see what LIFE with the local Air Force would be like, since we are "roughing it" with the Army right now.

I was completely impressed with Hurlburt Field's NEW FamCamp!  The only thing that is a downfall for this place is that they cleared ALL of the trees, made a field and then put in RV parking spots.  Who was the MORON that planned this?   I can't believe the people who build RV Camps...it is obvious that they are NOT campers!  However, the facility is NICE and NEW!

As for the Eglin FamCamps (yes they have TWO camps).  Both are in need of some TLC (Tender Loving Care).  The Robbins FamCamp is in the trees, but once again they don't have cement pads.  Gravel pads make it tough to get things level!!!!  Then there is Postal Point which is "rustic"!  It has a great view (overlooking the water), but in very unprotected from the weather with NO trees!  Also, Postal Point only has water and electricity!!!!!  Again, who was the I D 10 T that thought this was a good idea.

Today, I finally made it over to the Maxwell-Gunter Recreation Area located near Niceville, Florida.  All I can say is WOW!  It was NOT what I was expecting.

The Maxwell-Gunter Recreation Area (called Mid-Bay Shores) is located right next to the Mid-Bay Bridge (or should I say right UNDER the Mid-Bay Bridge) and on the Choctawhatchee Bay (north side).   While it is RIGHT ON the WATER, that's about all I can say about it.  The RV parking slots are sand and the landscape is in need of some attention.  But on the upside, it does have trees (we love trees since it helps keep the temperature down with it's hot outside, but also brings with it BUGS).

Here are a few photos of the Mid-Bay Shores Recreation Area.   Rough is putting it nicely.  I am very disappointed that the Maxwell Leadership doesn't take an interest in taking care of this "jewel"!  They need to take some notes from the US Army...which is surprising since the Army doesn't usually do Quality of Life too seriously.  Again, Army...YOU ROCK with the Destin Facility!!!!

Now, to be fair, we have done our research on military FamCamps before we ever make the decision to stay in one.  Before we headed to the Panhandle, we looked (online) at al of the reviews for the local FamCamps to get a "feel" for what would be our type of place.  We read the militarycampgrounds.us for some good reviews from other RVers to get a their take on the landscape.  While we have "disagreed" with MANY of the RVers in pervious parks, sometimes they are RIGHT ON!  We very much appreciate the forums and posts from other campers on the FamCamps, so keep them coming.

We still need to head to Panama City and see Tyndall AFB's FamCamp!  I wonder what that place holds!!!
